How this Eco-Friendly Paper is Made from Oranges

Crush is the innovative eco-friendly paper made by Favini replacing up to 15% of virgin tree pulp with 9 natural raw materials: the process residues from citrus and kiwi fruits, corn, coffee, olives, hazelnuts, almonds, lavender and cherries. The video tells the life cycle of one of these materials, the citrus fruits!

Italy is one of the 3 largest producers of citrus fruits in the world (Italy, Israel and Spain) with 1.000.000 tons dedicated to the fruit juice industry. Squeezing produces 40% juice, 60% are the by-products, citrus pulp. These residues are reused and reworked by other industries to obtain several interesting raw materials; essences, bioethanol, tyres, pectin and so on. After these processes the residues, called depectinised citrus pulp are normally dried and compacted into pellets and used as fillers in animal food, fertilizers or burned to produce energy. Favini intervenes at this point in the chain, reinvigorating this as a valuable raw material in substitution of virgin tree pulp in paper production — and it makes a wonderful range of papers which we have called Crush!

Crush is FSC certified, GMO free, contains 40% post-consumer recycled waste and is produced with EKOenergy, resulting in a 20% reduction in carbon footprint. Both the production process and the product are protected by European patent.

Crush is suitable for all applications, including luxury packaging, brochures, stationery tags, cards and labels. But what truly sets Crush apart is the extra dimension it offers customers who want to stand out. For example, how wonderful that a paper made using grape residues can be used to make a wine label.

Making Crush

It’s taken our product management team 18 months to develop, test, produce and patent the revolutionary environmental Crush range.

We’d already created a paper range using a method of reusing organic residues for Shiro Alga Carta. Algae from the Venice lagoon was reprocessed and added to the paper rather than sending it to landfill.

We thought if we could do it once, we could do it again.

This time we chose a mix of fruits and nuts to create a natural range of coloured papers. The result is an exciting range of subtle papers that help to give new life to products that would normally be added to animal food and fertilisers, or simply dumped in landfill.

The whole process takes place at our Rossano Veneto plant near Venice. The organic residues are processed with recycled and virgin pulp, using Favini’s very own electricity from our hydroelectric plant.

Crush incorporates ten organic residues that inspire the natural range of colors, citrus fruits, grapes, corn, olives, coffee, kiwi fruits, hazelnuts, almonds, cherries and lavender. We are convinced that they are so good that they can almost be eaten!
